Giving me access to your Porkbun domain
Your site is built. To put it on your own web address I need to change two DNS records at Porkbun. There are two ways to make that happen. The first is faster, the second keeps me out of your account. Both work, so pick whichever one you like better.
Option 1. Add me as an Authorized User
This is the fast path. You invite me, I accept, I make the change, you take the access back. Read the note underneath first so you know exactly what you are handing over.
Log in at porkbun.com
Use the account that actually owns the domain. If your nephew registered it for you, this is his login, not yours.
Click ACCOUNT in the top right, then Authorized Users
porkbun.comACCOUNTAuthorized Users
Account SettingsDomain ManagementAuthorized UsersSubaccountsAPI AccessACCOUNT sits in the top right of every page. Authorized Users is in the menu that drops down. Subaccounts is a different feature, skip it. Type my Porkbun username, not my email address
This one trips almost everybody. Porkbun invites people by username. If you type an email address it will not find me. I send you my exact username in the same message as this link, so copy it straight from there.
Submit the invite, then let me know
Porkbun emails me a link to accept. Nothing happens on your end until I click it, so if the screen looks unchanged, that is normal and not something you broke. Porkbun also requires the invited account to be verified with two factor authentication turned on. Mine is.
Take the access back when the site is live
Same place you granted it. ACCOUNT, then Authorized Users, then revoke me. I will not be offended. If you would rather leave it in place so I can fix things fast later, that is your call.
Option 2. Paste the two records yourself
Nobody gets into your account. It is two records, and Porkbun's DNS editor is one of the simpler ones out there. I send you a screenshot with your two exact values circled, and you copy them in.
Go to Domain Management and open Details on your domain
Domain ManagementACCOUNTDomain Management
yourdomain.comFind your domain in the list. Details is a drop-down at the right end of its row. Click the edit icon next to DNS Records
A panel called Manage DNS Records opens. That is the right room. Before you change anything, take a photo or a screenshot of the full list as it stands. If something goes wrong later, that picture is how we put it back.
Delete the two records pointing at pixie.porkbun.com
Skip this and the next step fails with
Could not add DNS record: A CNAME or ALIAS record with that host already exists, which reads like a real problem and is not one. The old records are just sitting in the parking spot.Manage DNS RecordsDomain ManagementDetailsDNS Records
(blank host) → pixie.porkbun.comwww → pixie.porkbun.comMX rows, leave these exactly as they areThose two are Porkbun's parking defaults. Delete both with the trash can icon. Never touch an MX row. Add the two records I send you
Here is the shape of what you are adding.
Type Name / Host Value A @the IP address I send you CNAME wwwthe hostname I send you The two values are different for every site, so I send you yours rather than printing them here. Copy them exactly, including any trailing dot.
One Porkbun quirk, and it is the big one. Where that table shows
@for the first record, Porkbun wants the Host field left completely empty. Every other registrar uses@for the root of your domain. Porkbun uses nothing at all. If you type@there it will not work the way you expect. For the second record, typewwwin the Host field as normal.Check your email records survived, then text me
Before you leave the page, look down the list and confirm every MX row you photographed in step two is still sitting there untouched. Then send me a message and I will confirm from my side that it is pointing the right way.
If you get stuck
Text or call me at (314) 246-9224, or email hello@localcraftdigital.com. I will stay on the phone and walk you through it click by click, or just do it with you. This page exists to save you a call. It is not here to dodge one.
