Why does AI recommend my competitors instead of my business?

AI recommendations can feel arbitrary, but most local-business gaps reduce to access, clarity, evidence or the exact question asked. Here is how to diagnose the difference without chasing a secret ranking formula.

AI may name a competitor because the sources retrieved for that question provide clearer, more accessible or better-supported evidence about that business. It may also be the wording, location or moment of the search. One answer is not a permanent leaderboard, so diagnose the evidence before assuming the competitor bought a special advantage.

Is the competitor’s website easier for search systems to access?

Access is the first check. OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, Anthropic identifies Claude-SearchBot for search results, Perplexity documents PerplexityBot, and Google’s AI experiences remain tied to ordinary Google Search eligibility. Each company also documents separate controls for other product uses.

A site can accidentally block a search crawler in robots.txt, through a hosting firewall or with a security service. A page can also be public but excluded from search. If the competitor is accessible and your site is not, no amount of clever copy fixes that first gate.

Use the free AI IQ check to see whether the page exposes those access signals and whether a measurement failed. “Could not be measured” is not the same as blocked, and a responsible diagnosis keeps that difference visible.

Does the competitor explain the business more clearly?

Search systems need unambiguous facts. A competitor page that names the company, service, town, service area and next step in visible text gives a retrieval system more to work with than a page built around slogans and stock photography.

Clarity does not mean repeating a keyword. It means answering the customer’s actual questions:

  • What does this company do?
  • Does it serve my town?
  • Is this the right service for my problem?
  • What proof can I inspect?
  • How do I take the next step?

The same rule helps a person deciding between two tabs. Good answer-engine work and good conversion work often meet at plain language.

Does the competitor have evidence your page lacks?

Evidence can include first-hand project details, service explanations, policies, named locations, original photographs, credentials and accurate public profiles. None guarantees a recommendation. Together they make a business easier to verify than unsupported claims such as “best in town.”

Google advises businesses to establish official details through their site and Business Profile. Its generative-search guidance also says ordinary search fundamentals still apply. That is a useful guardrail: make the business clear on its own site, then keep the public record consistent.

The practical ChatGPT version is covered in how small businesses get found in ChatGPT search. It separates the search crawler from model-training controls and avoids pretending one directory feeds every answer.

Is the competitor answering the exact question?

A homepage can be technically excellent and still be the wrong source for a narrow question. If someone asks how long a roof replacement takes, a competitor with a clear, experience-based answer may be more useful than a homepage that merely lists “roofing.”

Build pages around decisions customers genuinely make. Answer the question directly beneath the heading, explain what changes the answer and connect it to the relevant service. Do not publish filler just to create more URLs; every page should earn its place for a reader.

Could the AI answer simply be unstable?

Yes. AI search answers can change when the wording, model, source index, location or time changes. That is why screenshots without the prompt and date are weak evidence. A useful observation records the exact question, the answer, cited sources, date and any location context.

Repeat the same test before and after meaningful work. Our AI citation audit gives you a small protocol that can be rerun instead of turning one favorable answer into a broad claim.

What is the best first move?

Compare your page and the competitor’s page with the same grader, then fix the largest evidence gap on your own site. Do not copy their wording or chase every directory they use. Build the clearest truthful source for your own business and measure again.

If the diagnosis shows that the whole site needs to be rebuilt around that clarity, LocalCraft’s website plans explain the done-for-you options. The recommendation still begins with evidence: know what is missing before paying to change it.

Common questions

Why does AI name a competitor and not my business?
The system may have found clearer, more accessible or better-supported evidence for that competitor in the sources used for that question. The result can also change with wording, location and time. Treat one answer as a dated observation, then inspect access, business facts, useful answers and corroborating public profiles.
Does a higher AI IQ guarantee recommendations?
No. AI IQ measures whether a webpage supplies useful signals that answer engines can access and interpret. It does not control which sources an AI product retrieves for a particular prompt, and it cannot guarantee a citation, recommendation, lead or sale. The score is diagnostic evidence, not a placement promise.
What should I compare with the competitor’s site?
Compare the same things on both sites: crawler access, a clear business identity, location and service language, direct answers to buying questions, visible evidence and accurate structured data. Use the same grader and record the date. A fair comparison changes one variable at a time instead of relying on impressions.
